About

SDH was founded in 1999 and is an all-volunteer, secular home education network serving homeschoolers throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona. We have families of all different homeschooling philosophies, and we like it that way! Some choose a curriculum based model and others choose unschooling, as well as everything in between. The journey away from schooling is vast, and we know that people's methods change as time goes on. In SDH, we believe that our similarities far outweigh our differences, and we choose to support each other in the fact that we have all walked away from mainstream schooling.

EVENTS

SDH encourages anyone in the group to organize events. We welcome you and your ability to make things happen. The more opportunities our families bring to the group, the more rewarding the group is for our families.

Depending on the year, SDH has had recurring scheduled activities, such as Trampoline Day, Parents' Night Out, Archery Club, Survival Skills Club, Horseback Riding Camp and Minecraft Club. We also have field trips such as tours of Old Tucson, the Tucson Botanical Gardens, Sleeping Frog Farms and the Tucson Children's Museum. We regularly reserve group tickets for live theater events around town, many of which star members of SDH. Many families also organize classes or events for the whole group, such as language lessons, camping trips and drama classes. All activities will be listed in the Events section on our Facebook group.

As SDH is currently rebuilding from the "Great Pause" , we are working on building this years events. Come build with us!

FREE TABLE

Members typically bring free items to park meetings that they no longer need and put them on a designated table to share with the group. Feel free to take any items on the table and also to bring items to give away. You will find anything from books and clothes to home furnishings and tools. Items left unclaimed at the end of each Park Day are taken to a local charity and donated. Help us keep things out of the landfills and share our unneeded items with others.

PARENTS’ MEETING

Each year in the Fall and Spring Sonoran Desert Homeschoolers' parents meet as a group to discuss what activities we want to do, when to schedule the coming year's activities and who would like to organize them. This is the time when we also vote on how to allocate the funds collected during the year from our annual dues. Please feel free to arrive with your own ideas for great ways to use our money ... SDH loves creative suggestions.

Member Volunteers

Members of SDH are busy homeschooling families who take it upon themselves to voluntarily organize events or take on a job to help SDH function as a group. As a courtesy to those who organize an event, please provide a prompt RSVP for events if asked. If you find later that you cannot attend an SDH event that you confirmed you were going to attend, please take a moment to let the organizer know of the change in plans as quickly as possible. Before signing up for an event, please take a moment to confirm that you can indeed do the event. Some activities require a minimum number of participants and it is important for the event organizer to have an accurate count. In SDH everyone is welcome to volunteer, always.
